WHY IS A TYPICAL THERAPY SESSION ONLY 50 MINUTES?
50-minute sessions is considered the standard "hourly" time frame for psychotherapy. The rest of the time in that hour is used for your paperwork.
HOW OFTEN DO PEOPLE SEE A THERAPIST? AND FOR HOW LONG?
It varies. Most therapists see clients on a weekly or bi-weekly (every other week) basis. Clients may come in for as short as 3-5 sessions to as long as a few years. We will collaborate together on what would best fit your needs and treatment goals. A good therapist will recognize when it is time to terminate and when goals have been reached.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PHD, PSYD, LMFT, LCSW?
A licensed clinical psychologist with a PhD/PsyD typically requires 5-6 years of doctoral level training with emphasis in both counseling and research. An LMFT/LCSW therapist typically requires 2 years of masters level training, with emphasis mostly in counseling. LMFT specializes in marriage and family therapy, while LSCW varies (public policy, community work, or therapy).
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PSYCHOTHERAPY, THERAPY, COUNSELING?
None. They're all the same.
WHY IS THERAPY SO EXPENSIVE?
I agree! Here is a good article on this issue.
WHAT IF MY PRESENTING CONCERN ISN'T LISTED IN YOUR SPECIALTIES/FOCUS AREAS?
That's completely okay. I have worked with clients on many issues outside of those listed. Call for a free consultation to see if we'd still be a good fit together.
